Do you drive a used car? Do you want to make sure you're providing it with the care it needs to continue performing at a high level? That's where the following used car maintenance schedule comes in. Take a moment to read it over to get a clear understanding of the specific items that need to be completed and when they should take place.

Things You can Do on Your Own

First, let's review some of the aspects of automotive maintenance you can easily deal with in between making your way from Point A to Point B. See the list below:

  • Make sure all exterior and interior lights are in proper working order
  • Keep the windshield washer fluid at the appropriate level
  • Examine engine oil level
  • Inspect the tires for excessive wear and tear and ensure each one contains the correct amount of air pressure

It's a good idea to make sure each of these tasks is completed on a monthly basis.

3,000 to 7,000 Miles

If your vehicle is a bit older, it likely runs on conventional oil. If that's the case, it will need to be changed around 3,000 to 7,000 miles or so. Other things that should be covered during this time include an inspection of the transmission fluid, power steering fluid, and coolant.

15,000 Miles to 30,000 Miles

When the odometer reaches or is about to hit the 15,000-mile mark, you'll want to have the air filter replaced. At 20,000 miles, the battery and coolant should be inspected. Every 30,000 miles is when the power steering fluid needs to be replaced and the radiator hoses, HVAC system, brake pads, and suspension system gets checked.

40,000 to 50,000 Miles

At roughly every 40,000, 45,000, and 50,000 miles, you'll want to have the spark plugs and spark plug wires switched out and have the ignition system and suspension inspected.

60,000 Miles

When you see this number on the odometer, it's time to have the brake pads, brake fluid, radiator hoses, coolant, power steering fluid, and timing belt replaced.
